Privacy should be the starting point.
BirdChat is a messaging client for private workspaces. Your workspace or homeserver operator may provide the account, operate the server, and set additional rules for how it is used. This policy covers the BirdChat website and client services we operate; it does not replace the privacy policy of the homeserver you use.
By design, BirdChat does not need to know the contents of an end-to-end encrypted conversation to help deliver it. The people in a conversation, and the homeserver that carries it, still control what they send and receive.
The useful minimum.
Depending on how your workspace is configured, we may handle the following categories of information:
- Account and workspace details. Your homeserver address, account identifier, display name, avatar, and sign-in or session information.
- Encrypted message data. Messages, attachments, and room events are encrypted by participating devices when end-to-end encryption is enabled. The homeserver may store and relay the encrypted payload.
- Service and device details. Connection times, delivery status, room membership, app version, device and operating-system details, and diagnostic information needed to keep the service working.
- Support messages. If you contact us or your workspace administrator, we receive the details you choose to include so we can respond.
We do not use message content to build an advertising profile, and we do not sell personal information to advertisers.
Content can be private while metadata still exists.
End-to-end encryption protects message content on its way from a sender's device to the intended devices. In a normally configured encrypted room, BirdChat and the homeserver operator cannot read that content.
Encryption does not hide every piece of information around a conversation. Account IDs, room membership, timestamps, delivery information, network addresses, and device details may be processed by the homeserver or infrastructure providers. Keep your recovery keys safe: losing access to them can mean losing access to encrypted history.
You decide what stays.
Message and account retention is primarily controlled by your homeserver and workspace administrator. Uninstalling the app removes the client from a device; it does not automatically delete an account or conversation history stored on a server or on another device.
You can review or update profile details in the app when your homeserver allows it, leave rooms, remove local data, and ask your workspace administrator about account deletion or export. If you use BirdChat without a workspace, contact the service operator listed by that server.
BirdChat is intended for people who can understand and agree to the terms that govern their workspace. Do not use the service if local law prohibits you from doing so.
Clear when something changes.
We may update this policy when the service, law, or privacy practices change. We will post the revised version on this page and update the date above. Continued use after an update means the revised policy applies to future use.
For a privacy question, start with your workspace administrator or the person who invited you. They can identify the homeserver operator responsible for your account and route a request to the right place.
